A Formation defines how the players in your starting line-up can be positioned.
Each fantasy sports game has specific requirements for line-ups, so they are similar to the real world. These prerequisites force you to think strategically, just like a real manager must do.
Example: fantasy football
- You have a 15-man roster
- You must have at least 3 defenders, 3 midfielders and 1 forward
- These requirements lead to these valid formations: 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 5-3-2 and 5-4-1
- It’s impossible to have a formation with only forwards (eg. who are not penalized for goals against) and no defenders. This also wouldn’t happen in real life.
The formation depends on the sport. In American Football they don’t use formations. They let you fill in fixed positions, one of which is the flex position.
